Gaojiabian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The name of the Gaojiabian Fm is originated from the Kaochiapien (Gaojiabian) Shale proposed by Liu Jichen (see Grabau, 1924). The type section is located near Gaojiabian Village of Cangshan in Jurong County, Jiangsu Province.
Synonym: (高家边组); Kaochiapien Fm
Lithology and Thickness
It comprises an extremely thick suite of shale, siltstone and fine-grained sandstone and can be subdivided into three parts at the Tangshan section in Jiangning County. The total thickness of the formation is up to 1200-1400 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Gaojiabian Fm is in conformable contact with the underlying Guanyingqiao Fm (= Guanyingqiao Mbr of upper Wufeng Fm) of the upper Ordovician.
Upper contact
The Gaojiabian Fm is in conformable contact with the overlying Houjiatang Fm
GeoJSON
Fossils
The fossil finds Monograptus arcuata in the upper part of Gaojiabian Fm provide important evidence for defining the upper boundary of the formation, which indicates that the M. arcuata-bearing strata are approximately correspondent to both the Penjiayuan Member of the Luoreping Fm at Yichang and to part of the Qiaogou Member of the Shiniulan Fm at Qijiang, i.e. can be correlated with the middle part of the M. sedgwickii zone. The Gaojiabian Fm still include strata of 228 m in thickness, which are higher than the M. arcuata-bearing strata and probably represent the upper part of the M. sedgwickii zone and/or even higher graptolite zone.
